What is GeoGuessr?

GeoGuessr is a geography-based Esport where players must use Google Street View imagery to determine their location within the world. The game is browser-based and offers both single-player and multiplayer competitions and challenges.

The competitive nature of GeoGuessr, as well as the depth and skill involved in determining the location, has made it an ideal Esport. GeoGuessr competitors use their geography knowledge to spot differences in languages, road signs, architecture, traffic, flags, landscapes and more to narrow down their location. The faster the guess and the more accurate it is, the more points the player scores.

The GeoGuessr World Cup is the top level of competitive GeoGuessr, which sees competitors from around the world taking part for a chance to be crowned world champions.

History of GeoGuessr

GeoGuessr was launched in 2013 by Anton Wallen, a Swedish IT consultant. He loved using Google Street View to visit other countries and places across the world and designed a program which would generate a random location. After playing with this program for a while, he realised it could become a fun challenge. Two weeks later, the game was completed and launched.

After its release, GeoGuessr quickly became a huge hit, but it gained renewed interest from people around the world in March 2021 following the COVID-19 pandemic. With people confined indoors and unable to travel, GeoGuessr presented an escape and major streamers and video content creators helped to popularise it further.

The very first GeoGuessr Team World Cup was held in 2022, featuring 30 teams and organised by La Ligue GeoGuessr and French streamer Antoine Daniel. GeoGuessr sponsored the event but, after its success, decided to host their own World Cup.

The inaugural GeoGuessr World Cup was held in October 2023 in Stockholm, Sweden. It featured 24 participants from 21 countries and a prize pool of $50,000. Dutch player Patrick “Consus” Noordijk won the event, beating French player Mathieu “Blink” Huet in the final. In 2024, Blinky made his return and won the title.

Format & Schedule of GeoGuessr World Cup

The GeoGuessr World Cup is held each year, featuring the best GeoGuessr players. Between November 2024 and June 2025, players will have a chance to qualify for the tournament by taking part in the World League and Regional Majors.

The top 12 players by world rankings at the end of the season, as well as 3 winners of wildcard events and 1 winner of the Open Majors, will qualify for the World Championship Finals.

This year, the World Cup will take place in Copenhagen between 29-30 August.

The prize pool for this year’s GeoGuessr World Championship Finals starts at $100,000.

How to Bet on GeoGuessr & Esports Bet Types

Betting on GeoGuessr is fairly similar to other types of Esports betting. First, you’ll need to sign up and make a deposit. Once that’s out of the way, simply open an event and check the latest odds.
