What is the Copa Sudamericana?

Copa Sudamericana is an international club soccer competition contested by elite clubs in South America. There are 56 qualifying teams for the tournament – 44 through their respective leagues, while 12 qualify after being knocked out of Copa Libertadores.

If you’re a fan of European soccer, the best way to look at Copa Sudamericana is that it’s like the Europa League , the continent’s second most prestigious competition, behind the UEFA Champions League . The winners of the tournament will face the winners of the Copa Libertadores in the 2026 Recopa Sudamericana .

History of the Copa Sudamericana

After the success of the Copa Libertadores , which was founded in 1960, several attempts were made to create a secondary continental club soccer tournament. In 1992, the Copa CONMEBOL was established as a South American club football tournament for teams which hadn’t qualified for the Copa Libertadores or Supercopa Sudamericana. However, it was discontinued in 1999.

Originally, CONMEBOL intended to establish a pan-American club cup competition, but instead, the Copa Sudamericana was founded by merging the Copa Mercosur and Copa Merconorte in 2002. While it may be secondary to the Copa Libertadores, it’s still highly coveted, with the phrase “La Otra Mitad de La Gloria” (The other half of glory) used to describe winning the trophy.

Since it was first introduced, the Sudamericana format has changed significantly. It was originally a single-elimination tournament with 21 teams. However, it was later expanded to include a first stage and a group stage. 18 different teams have won the competition, with the record for the most titles tied at 2 for 5 different clubs.

Copa Sudamericana Teams

Teams from throughout South America compete in Copa Sudamericana. Brazilian clubs and Argentinian clubs have six berths, while Bolivia , Chile , Colombia , Ecuador , Paraguay, Peru, Uruguay , and Venezuela have four.

Previous Champions

LDU Quito (Ecuador), Boca Juniors (Argentina), Independiente (Argentina), Athletico Paranaense (Brazil) and Independiente del Valle (Ecuador) all have 2 titles apiece and are the most successful teams in the tournament’s history.

The most recent Copa Sudamericana champions are:

  • 2024 - Racing

  • 2023 - LDU Quito

  • 2022 - Independiente del Valle

  • 2021 - Athletico Paranaense

  • 2020 - Defensa y Justicia

Format & Schedule of the 2025 Copa Sudamericana

The Copa Sudamericana is split into three sections: the first stage, the group stage and the knockout stage.

32 teams enter the first stage, with the winners entering the group stage along with 12 teams from Brazil and Argentina. In addition, 12 teams eliminated from the Copa Libertadores will enter the Copa Sudamericana during either the group stage or the knockout round playoffs.

The 2025 Copa CONMEBOL Sudamericana commenced on 4 March with the first stage. The group stage runs throughout April and May 2025 and is followed by the Knockout round playoffs in July. Round of 16 runs through August, followed by the quarter-finals, semi-finals and the final, which determines the winner on 22 November in Santa Cruz de la Sierra, Bolivia.
