What is Coppa Italia?
The Coppa Italia, known in English simply as the Italy Cup, is the annual domestic cup competition that involves clubs competing in Italian soccer. It’s a knockout competition similar to England’s FA Cup or Spain’s Copa del Rey.
Winners not only get to wear the coccarda on their kits but also qualify for the UEFA Europa League and Supercoppa Italiana the following season. If the winners have already qualified for the UEFA Champions League, the Europa League place does to the next highest-placed team in Serie A.
History of the Coppa Italia
Italian football was formerly split between two separate governing bodies, the Italian Football Confederation and the Italian Football Federation (FIGC). Many of the country’s most prestigious clubs joined the Italian Football Confederation, so the FIGC established a new cup competition in 1922, which was won by FC Vado.
After the inaugural season, the cup experienced a long period of turbulence. The 1926-27 tournament was cancelled during the round of 32, and it wasn’t held again until 1935-36. World War II would disrupt the competition once more, with the cup cancelled between 1944 and 1957. However, it returned in 1958 and has been held every season since.
Juventus are the most successful club in the history of the Coppa Italia, with a total of 15 wins, including in 2024. Roma and Inter Milan are tied in 2nd place with 9 wins each, although Inter won most recently in 2023.
The Stadio Olimpico of Rome has hosted the most Coppa Italia finals, with all final matches since 2008 held here except for the 2021 final.
Format & Schedule of Coppa Italia
The Coppa Italia features seven rounds, with teams from all levels of Italian football able to take part. The initial preliminary rounds begin in August and are contested between the lowest-ranked teams. Clubs enter the tournament based on their league position, with the winner advancing to the next stage.
4 clubs from both Serie B and Serie C enter the tournament in the preliminary round, while the remaining 16 clubs from Serie B, along with 12 clubs from Serie A, join the first round. The winners of the second round are then joined by 8 Serie A clubs for the round of 16.
The draw for the matchups takes place before the tournament gets underway, and teams compete in single-leg matches except for the semi-finals, which are two-legged. If the game is tied, extra time is played, and a penalty shootout determines the winner if the score is still level.
